Barred, but she was out of Caprica, the mare they almost didn’t find.
Barred was sired by Three Bars, who was sired by Percentage and Three Bars was out of Myrtle Dee by Luke McLuke. You will recall that Three Bars has a breeding pattern of 5x5x5 to Domino. The dam of Barred was Ready by Red Joe of Arizona, a son of Joe Reed P-3 who was sired by Joe Blair and out of the Cajun-Bred running mare Della Moore by Old DJ. The dam of Red Joe of Arizona was Little Red Nell by Brown Billy. This would make Joe Reed II and Red Joe of Arizona 3/4-brothers. The dam of Ready, the dam of Barred, was Ruby by Red Cloud by Possum, the full brother to Little Joe and some more of that Old Billy blood.
Barred, when crossed on Belle Of Midnight, produced five foals with three racing ROM including Miss Night Bar, who was AAA rated; Midnight Bar, who was AAA rated; and Barred’s Belle, an AA rated runner. Belle Of Midnight was the dam of two AQHA High Point Award winners in Midnight Bar, the 1961 High Point Pole Bending Horse; and Barbeque, the 1962 AQHA High Point Pole Bending Stallion.
Moon Deck was purchased by James V. A. Carter in 1955, paying $9,000 for the J.
B Ferguson-bred horse. Foaled in 1950, he started his racing career in 1952 and raced till 1958. He made 62 starts with 11 wins, 11 seconds and six thirds. He was a finalist
in 14 stakes races with two stakes wins in the 1953 New Mexico State Fair Derby and the 1955 Los Alamitos Championship. It was at this point that Carter moved his horses to Clovis, California, to better take advantage of racing and marketing his horses in that state.
The sire of Moon Deck was Top Deck and that brings us back to J. B. Ferguson and how he used the Cajun-Bred Running mares he bought and bred to Top Deck. Top Deck was the King Ranch stallion that was unraced due to injury. In the interview with Warren and the influence of Three Bars and Top Deck, Warren found Top Deck
not to be as strong a horse in conformation as Three Bars. But Top Deck brought the speed ingredients to the mix. He was sired by Equestrian and out of River Boat by Chicaro. A look at his overall pedigree shows that he had pedigree patterns of 6x6 to Domino, a 4x4x5x5 to Broomstick, a son
