Mexican Breeders’ Futurity
BR FICHA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
With eight of the ten qualifiers from Nov. 21, the final of the Mexican Breeders’ Futurity was held. The scratched horses were BR Chivali Champ, who recorded the fastest time in the trials with :19.410 for the 400 yards, and Divas First Tex, who obtained the ninth best time.
This was the last race of the 2021 season and was a particularly emotional event. Reserved for two year olds born in Mexico,
it had as an economic incentive a purse of $1,857,380 pesos ($87,893 U.S. approx.), where 42% was allocated to reward first place, and the rest in decreasing percentages according to the position at the wire of each finalist.
The crowd favored Perla Cartel, with BR Ficha as their second choice. It was these two fillies that led the field, only in reverse order to the aforementioned, resulting in BR Ficha being crowned the winner.
The actions on the track were clean. The winner started from the extreme 10-post and looked for firm ground near the outer rail. She moved freely under the successful command
of Mario Albero López Marmolejo in the demanding 400 yards. Coming from behind, they dominated Perla
Cartel, AS Tormenta and La
Chamulita who were vying for the lead of the race. These four fillies gave a spectacular finish.
BR Ficha covered
the distance in :19.61
for a 91 speed index,
surpassing Perla Cartel by
a neck. With this time, she
improved by 6 hundredths
the :19.67 she clocked in
her qualifying race, where
she finished third behind
her half-brother BR Chivali
Champ and the aforementioned Perla Cartel.
This marks her fifth win in 10 starts. She won her first three races, including the Garañones Futurity Consolation. She was also a finalist in the Subasta Selecta Futurity and The Mexican Breeders Futurity Challenge and her race record
is 5-1-1 with earnings close to 1.7 million pesos, including the $780,110 pesos ($36,915 U.S.
approx.) from this race.
The winning filly is bred and owned by Maximiliano
Pérez Correa, owner of the stallion Southern Corona and the mare BR Heza First (by Hezaspicymeatsaballa), and runs on behalf of the Cuadra Bronco Rider and is trained by Ismael Parra Martínez.
The very competitive filly Perla Cartel (Danny Cartel- Six Royal Alibis, Sixes Royal) finished in second place with Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez in
the saddle. She belongs to the Cuadra Baldeli and was saddled by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas.
The filly AS Tormenta (Palm Beach-Kool Showgirl, First N Kool) captured third place under jockey Arturo Vega for owner Cuadra Je Eme and her trainer Rigoberto Vega.
