Mexico Champion of Champions-RG3
JRS CORONAS SHADOW
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
This classic is one of the few races at 440 yards at the Hipodromo de las Americas and features some of the best performers of three years and older, and is part of the end of season events.
Sure enough, there were JRS Coronas Shadow and Jay Number 7, who in that
order won this classic in 2019, and in 2020
JRS Coronas Shadow came in second to Jay Number 7, so it was a kind of rematch. They were joined by other successful participants, such as The Deadline, Jess A Reason and Corona Lips, who were part of the nine runners who aspired to earn the main part of the prize for $492,500 pesos ($23,306 U.S. approx.).
At the break, Corona Lips and Jay Number 7 made contact, which also affected The Deadline. However, the race flowed quickly, highlighted by Jess A Reason running very close to the inner rail and ready to battle. Jay Number 7 took over from the center of the track, while JRS Coronas Shadow moved down the right rail, taking advantage of his favorable starting position from the 9-post.
It was the latter who imposed his strength and speed under the command of Yair Daniel Báez Soto to clearly put
himself at the front of the
group in the final yards,
establishing his dominance
by 1-length difference over
Jess A Reason. In a short
:20.93 (SI 108) doubts were
cleared and JRS Coronas
Shadow reiterated the
hierarchy shown in 2019,
becoming a “two-time
champion of champions”.
This record improved the
:21.03 with which he won
this classic two years ago,
also under the riding of Báez Soto.
The seven-year-old gelding is a son of Coronas Leaving You and is out of the mare Shadow Of Colors (by Dashing Val), bred in the United States by Julien Stevens III. He debuted in Mexico on Sept. 8, 2019, the year in
which he won four consecutive races, including the aforementioned Champion of Champions.
In his three appearances in 2020, he placed second in
the J. Merced Gómez Orozco Classic and Champion of Champions, as well as third in the Inaugural Classic. In 2021, he won the Speed Classic on Mar. 7, to return nine months later to add the Champion of Champions to his record for the second time. His current statistic is 10-6-3 with more than 5.3 million pesos in profits, including the results obtained in the United States.
He is owned by the Cuadra Los Gavilanes, where he is trained by the experienced Rubén Romo García.
