California and North Carolina combined to produce Golden Boi, the Champion 2-Year- Old Colt of 2021. M & G Farms hails from Hendersonville, North Carolina, but Golden Boi was bred and has raced exclusively on the opposite coast.
M & G Farms has raced horses since 2011, and stakes-winning Logans Dash, the dam of Golden Boi, was one of their original racehorses. M & G sent her to California to be bred, and she has produced foals by Favorite Cartel and Foose.
Golden Boi, a son of Favorite Cartel, grew up at Burns Ranch, where the stallion stands.
“We raised Golden Boi at the ranch,” said Dr. Steve Burns. “He’s been an impressive individual from day one.”
Trained by Valentin Zamudio, Golden Boi won four of six races. His biggest victory came in the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 at Los Alamitos, and he won the final by a length.
A large family contingent from North Carolina flew out to California for the Ed Burke.
“It’s great to be able to celebrate in person,” said Johanna Montano of M & G Farms. “I’m so glad to be here with my family. Coming from a small town in North Carolina to be here in California, living the dream is great.”
Zamudio called Golden Boi the best horse he has ever trained.
“Each time we have sent him to the track, he has gotten better and better,” the trainer said.
Montano recalled having first traveled to California to meet Golden Boi not long after he was foaled.
“I saw him and he was just this little horse,” she said. “I see him now winning this big horse race. It is insane.”
Following the Burke, a stumble at the start of the California Breeders Freshman Stakes cost Golden Boi that victory. He returned in the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 trials, winning by 1 1/4 lengths and qualifying the fastest.
Golden Boi became ill with colitis and was unable to compete in the Golden State final. The trial marked his final start of the year, with total earnings of $488,791.
