Trainer Trey Wood and a group of owners went looking for a broodmare prospect at the 2020 Ruidoso Yearling Sale. For $20,000 they got so much more: Revenant Moon, the Champion 2-Year-Old Filly of 2021.
“I liked her because of her family, and she had great conformation,” said Wood.
Revenant Moon descends from a family that breeders Dosi and Norma Alvarez have cultivated for several generations. They bought two in the family at once, purchasing Pukka Up, Revenant Moon’s fourth dam, with Tilted Moon at that mare’s side. Tilted Moon produced Nagano Moon, who in turn produced Sochi Moon, the dam of Revenant Moon. Sochi Moon is a half- sister to Champion First Moonflash.
Norma Alvarez recalled that Revenant Moon had a lot of personality as a baby and didn’t like interrupted naps. “She was very stubborn,” said Norma. “She’d try to ignore me and just lie there. When she got up she ran us out of the pen. She was mad. I’ve never seen a little baby do that. It became kind of a joke— don’t wake her up.”
Revenant Moon was able to channel that stubbornness into racing ability. Wood trained her for Texas owners Scott Bryant, Norman Allen, and Trey Odom.
She began her racing career at Remington Park in the trials for the Oklahoma Futurity-G2. She smoked her competition by 2-lengths as the fastest qualifier. Revenant Moon had a tougher time in the final, battling with Hock It To You. But Revenant Moon proved best by a neck as the 7-10 favorite.
The Alvarezes bred Revenant Moon in New Mexico, and she returned to her native state for the Ruidoso Downs meeting. She put in a devastating Ruidoso Futurity-G1 trial performance, soaring home on top by 4 3/4-lengths and again qualifying the fastest.
Those three performances were so impressive that they earned her the Championship title. She had a horrible start in the Ruidoso Futurity final and never had a chance. Revenant Moon was right there in her trial for the All American Futurity-G1, but ended up fourth.
