Following her undefeated World Champion season in 2020, Whistle Stop Cafe kept her winning streak going into 2021. She added another title, that of Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, and headed off to retirement as a cherished family member of Whitmire Ranch.
Lainie and Ray Whitmire own Whistle Stop Cafe, having bought her for $42,000 from breeder Bobby Cox at the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Cox has shepherded the filly’s family back to Fitting Celebration, her fourth dam, who also produced Champion Brimmerton, bred and raced by Cox.
“We’re just thankful that we have her, and we’re thankful for Bobby for breeding her,” said Lainie at the awards ceremony. “We’re thankful for (trainers) Trey and Blane (Wood) for making it all possible.
“Whistle Stop will never have to worry about anything ever again. She’s happy. She has her own place to run and play and be a horse. And then she’s got a big fluffy stall with lots of shavings for when she comes in at night.”
The 2020 All American Futurity-G1 capped off Whistle Stop Cafe’s World Championship season, a year in which she went a perfect six for six. The Whitmires gave her a break, and she returned to the races for the Rainbow Oaks trials at Ruidoso Downs July 11.
As the 1-5 favorite in her trial, Whistle Stop Cafe won by an easy length. That qualified her as the fourth fastest, and bettors made her the 9-10 favorite for the July 24 final with regular rider Tanner Thedford.
Breaking from the rail position, Whistle Stop Cafe came away on the lead. She dominated the 440 yards to win by a half-length in :21.379.
“I thought it was perfect,” said Lainie. “When she broke on top, I felt very confident that she was going to win it. But there were so many nice, nice horses in there.”
When Whistle Stop Cafe was named World Champion of 2020, she became the first 2-year- old filly to accomplish the feat since Laico Bird in 1967. Then Whistle Stop Cafe went Laico Bird one better in adding the Champion 3-Year-Old Filly title.
