Kiss Thru Fire has already started 2022 in good fashion, becoming only the third mare to win consecutive runnings of the Charger Bar Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos. In between those victories she added so many top performances that she was named the 2021 Champion Aged Mare.
The Charger Bar began Kiss Thru Fire’s 2021 season as well, and it marked the first Grade 1 win for the Gentry Farms homebred. Juan Aleman trains Kiss Thru Fire at Los Alamitos, and Trey Wood handles her at Remington Park.
“She’s been awesome,” said Kirk Gentry. “As a two year old, she had a little trouble getting out of the gates. She’s doing her job now.”
Kiss Thru Fire came right back after the 2021 Charger Bar to take the Denim N Diamonds Handicap-G3. Aleman also noted that her improvement at the start helped her immensely.
“She has been breaking good every time in her last three starts,” the trainer said. “She’s shown what she can do when she gets out of the gate.”
After a foray to Remington, Kiss Thru Fire returned to Los Alamitos and was made the heavy 2-5 favorite for the California Breeders’ Matron Stakes-RG3. Bumped in her hind end at the start, she still forged to the front and scored by 1/2-length over the talented Fayvorite Chick.
Next came the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1, a race that had twice eluded Kiss Thru Fire’s dam, Fredaville. A multiple graded stakes winner, the 2012 Champion Aged Mare, and a full sister to Champion Fredericksburg, Fredaville ran third in that year’s Vessels. Kiss Thru Fire improved on that to finish second.
But Kiss Thru Fire wasn’t finished for the year. She added the Sound Dash Handicap and then finished first in the Las Damas Handicap-G2. However, she lugged out late, bothering foes, and was disqualified to seventh.
Kiss Thru Fire returned to nab her second Charger Bar, and Gentry would love to see her have a similar season.
“I hope to be on the stage next year,” said Gentry.
