With colts going off to the breeding shed early, it’s rare that one sticks around long enough to be voted Champion Aged Stallion for two consecutive years. Yet that’s what Eagles Fly Higher did, adding the 2021 title to the one he earned in 2020.
Not only was Eagles Fly Higher competing
as a 5-year-old horse in 2021, he faced top rivals throughout the year. He began his season at Remington Park in March, spent the middle of the year at Los Alamitos, and finished up in November at Lone Star Park. An Oklahoma-bred, Eagles Fly Higher did his best racing at his home track of Remington Park. He ran five times there last year, and his back-to-back stakes scores went a long way toward his getting that second Championship title.
Eagles Fly Higher had a vast team aiding him. Darling Farms and Valeriano Racing Stables own the stallion, having acquired him from breeders Vernon Harman Jr. and Robert T. “Tom” Moudy III prior to the 2020 season. Casey Black, Jaime Gomez, and Roberto Madrigal trained Eagles Fly Higher throughout 2021.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Moudy complimented the job Dan Darling and Sammy Valeriano have done.
“They took over his three-year-old year, and they have done a wonderful job with him,” Moudy said. Moudy also credited Jim Markum with getting him involved with Lone Bet, the dam of Eagles Fly Higher.
Trained by Black at Remington, Eagles Fly Higher tuned up with a third in the Mar. 9 Mighty Deck Three Stakes-RG2 prior to a victory in the Mar. 20 Eastex Stakes-G2, where he led wire-to- wire to win by a 1/2-length. Black wheeled him back in the Apr. 1 Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG2 where he triumphed by a length.
The stallion earned more checks throughout 2021, raising his lifetime earnings to $623,821.
“This is such an honor to have a back-to-back winner,” said Moudy. “We’re tickled to death.”
