Wascallywittlewabbit excels in stringing together a series of wins.
In both 2020 and 2021, Wascallywittlewabbit won four in a row. The first quartet wasn’t enough to win the Distance Championship title over Madewell in 2020. But in 2021, battles with Madewell earned Wascallywittlewabbit the title, especially after Wascallywittlewabbit’s final win in the AQHA Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship-G1.
Michael Joiner trains Wascallywittlewabbit
for owner Rogers Farms, and Benito Baca rode him all year. Baca had such confidence in the gelding that he said he would ride him anywhere in the country. And Baca did, even when it meant defeating his wife, Maria, on none other than Madewell.
Wascallywittlewabbit won his first 2021
race in the Apr. 1 Pauls Valley Stakes-G2 at Remington Park. He led almost from the start to score by 1/2-length.
He met Madewell in his next outing, the May 29 Remington Park Distance Championship-G1. Wascallywittlewabbit led throughout and won by 1 1/4-lengths.
Wascallywittlewabbit added to his record with a 3 1/4-length win in the Aug. 28 Zia 870 Championship at Ruidoso without Madewell.
The two squared off again in the Sept. 18 Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge -G2. Madewell and Maria got their only win against Wascallywittlewabbit and Benito, by 1 1/2 lengths.
In their final meeting, Wascallywittlewabbit and Benito defeated Madewell and Maria by
2 3/4-lengths in the Oct. 23 AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1 at Albuquerque. Rogers Farms supplemented Wascallywittlewabbit to the race at $20,000, which paid off handsomely.
Wascallywittlewabbit, bred by Michael Weatherly in New Mexico, is a true 870-yard horse. He has raced exclusively at that distance since mid-2019, and only one of his 11 lifetime victories has come in a shorter race.
