DIVING AND SNORKELING
Once you’ve seen underwater Curaçao, you won’t be able to stop talking
about it. The natural treasures that lie just beneath the surface, are rare
and remarkable. If you haven’t tried diving before, this is the place to start.
Crystal-clear waters offer outstanding visibility to explore marine life and
sunken shipwrecks.
“ Wear a light t-shirt and plenty of sunscreen. You can always get
sunburn, even in the water.
”
There are more than 65 sites to dive or snorkel on the island, each one more
beautiful, colorful and spectacular than the last. Here are five of our favorites.
CAR PILE
This man-made artificial reef is a sort of underwater junkyard. Old cars
piled on the seabed between 22 and 50 meters deep, are covered with
coral and sponges. For motor heads, you’ll spot models dating back as far
as the 1940s.
SUPERIOR PRODUCER
One of the finest wrecks to explore in the Caribbean is the Superior
Producer. Her wheelhouse lies at a depth of 24 meters and the hull sinks
down to 30 meters. Watch for grouper, barracuda, coral and anemones.
HELL’S CORNER
Big schools of fish congregate at Hell’s Corner, attracting barracudas to
the party. Brain, pillar and star coral are all in excellent condition here. The
reef drops off steeply, so it’s for experienced divers only.
MUSHROOM FOREST
Named after the mushroom-shaped coral, a wide variety of tropical sea
life can be spotted here: blowfish, box fish, spotted and green moray eels,
spotted drums, parrot fish and sea turtles, to name a few. There’s also a
large cave where you might just run into a nurse shark or two.
