This is the first edition of Diagnostic Medical Sonography: The Vascular System. Ultrasound educators and colleagues encouraged and supported the development of this textbook. It contains fundamental materials and advanced topics hoping to appeal to readers with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences. This textbook is intended to be used as either an introduction to the profession or as a comprehensive reference guide. The content provides groundwork for an essential understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. This material is ex- pected to benefit sonographers, vascular technologists, students, practitioners, and physicians caring for patients with vascular disease.
The first section of this textbook presents basic vascular anatomy as well as arte- rial and venous physiology. The next four sections contain chapters that focus on specific components of the vascular system, namely the cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial, peripheral venous, and abdominal vascular systems. The sixth and final section contains additional chapters with topics relevant to vascular ultrasound, in- cluding the use of quality assurance statistics. Sonographic examination techniques, technical considerations, pitfalls, and diagnostic criteria are just some of the sec- tions contained within the chapters. Within the peripheral arterial section, a chap- ter focuses on nonimaging physiologic arterial testing, which is often performed in conjunction with ultrasound testing. When appropriate, complementary testing procedures are also presented within several chapters.
Every attempt was made to compile an up-to-date and factual textbook. The reader should find the format of the chapters easy to follow, interesting, and com- prehensive. Normal and abnormal sonographic findings are depicted in numerous illustrations throughout the chapters. Several case study examples are also provided throughout the chapters.
The goal of this textbook was to be as complete as possible while recognizing that augmentation with ongoing supplemental information from peer-reviewed journals will be required. Learning is a lifelong process that can be a challenge but should be looked upon as a welcome exercise. The essential information contained within this textbook should establish a basis for those seeking to build their knowledge of vascular ultrasound.
