5 — Uncommon Pathology of the Carotid System
 77
SUMMARY
Sonographers expect to observe atherosclerotic plaque during carotid ultrasound examinations. There are several other well-characterized diseases that may present within the extracranial portion of the carotid vessels. Understanding the various pathologies and the associated ultrasound findings will aid in the proper diagnosis of these less commonly encountered carotid abnormalities.
Critical Thinking Questions
   1. While examining a tortuous internal carotid artery, you observe an area of color aliasing. What can you can do in order to determine if there is a stenosis?
2. When obtaining a Doppler waveform from the false lumen of a dissection, what direction would you expect the flow to be going?
3. A patient presents with a pulsatile neck mass. What would be helpful to differentiate the mass?
