  THYROID PATHOLOGY
GRAVES DISEASE AND HYPERTHYROIDISM
• Hyperthyroidism is a condition that results from the overproduction of thyroid hormones.
• Clinical findings in individuals suffering from hyperthyroidism include bulging eyes, heat intolerance, nervousness, weight loss, and hair loss.
• Graves disease, which also may be referred to as a diffuse toxic goiter, is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
• Sonographically, the thyroid may appear diffusely heterogenous or hypoechoic.
• Hypervascularity may be noted with color Doppler imaging within the thyroid gland. This is termed the “thyroid inferno”.
