THYROID PATHOLOGY
• A goiter is defined as an enlarged, hyperplastic thyroid gland.
• Ithasmanycauses,includingiodinedeficiency, Graves disease, and thyroiditis.
• Enlargementofthethyroidcanbediagnosedby calculating volume measurements or by obtaining an AP thickness of the thyroid isthmus.
• Sonographically, the thyroid will appear enlarged and heterogenous.
• Theenlargedthyroidglandthatcontainsmultiple nodules with cystic and solid components may be referred to as a multinodular goiter or adenomatous goiter.
