• Hyperfunctioning, or “hot nodules,” yield dark areas on a thyroid scan, while hypofunctioning, or “cold nodules” yield light or blank areas on the scan.
• Most cancers or hypofunctioning nodules and will therefore appear as cold nodules, though not all cold nodules are malignant.
