The laboratory performing the test will provide the reference range.
However, a gestational sac, the earliest definitive sign of an intrauterine pregnancy, should generally be visualized between 1000 and 2000 mIU/mL with transvaginal imaging.
The period given to describe the earliest sonographic detection of an intrauterine pregnancy is termed the discriminatory zone.
Based on quantitative hCG levels, sonographers can utilize the discriminatory zone and determine if an intrauterine pregnancy should be visualized.
