• Trauma, infections, and cancer will affect the pediatric spleen much like they affect the adult spleen.
• Epstein-Barrinfection,whichisassociatedwith infections mononucleosis, will typically result in splenomegaly in children.
• Also, children suffering from sickle cell disease often have an enlarged spleen.
• SicklecelldiseaseisfoundmorefrequentlyinAfrican- American children and Hispanic children of Caribbean descent in the US.
