Greensboro Connects
Meet our Town!
Greensboro is located on the Eastern Shore on a bend of the
Choptank River in northern Caroline County. We have a
number of good Victorian structures and an inescapable fl avor
of the 19th century with its less hurried pace of life.
In 1732, the Maryland Assembly passed an act for the purpose
of founding a town at Choptank Bridge on the Choptank
River, at a point where the meandering stream described an
ess-shaped curve known as the “Great Bend”.
A plat of this proposed town, to be known as Bridge Town, can
be found in the land records of Dorchester County. Th e owner
of record in 1732, was an enterprising native of Dorchester
County named Peter Rich. A merchant, innkeeper and consid-
erable landowner, Rich crossed the Choptank in 1732 and
patented 31 acres of lowland in the “Great Bend” of the river
adjoining the western end of the bridge, which tract he named,
not coincidentally, “Bridge Town”. The bridge was built in 1725,
the first bridge built to cross the Choptank River.
In 1791 an act of the General Assembly of Maryland was passed
for the purpose of changing the name of the town to Greens-
boro. To date, research has not revealed the reason for the selec-
tion of the new name; however, historians have traditionally
believed that the choice was intended to honor Valentine Green
who was a major land owner in the area at the time.
