AMCCCCM Classic
CORONA LIPS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The race for the second jewel of the Mexican Quarter Horse Triple Crown was contested on May 16 among eight 3-year-old partici- pants in which the great absentee was Ferarri B, the winner of the first jewel (Easily A Possum Classic) which we recently learned has died. There were 400 yards of “good” track
in which a prize of $329,300 pesos ($16,414 approx. U.S.) was contested.
Rancho la Soledad de Álvarez and Cuadra Santa Elena entered two of their best runners each, improving their chances of capturing the main part of the purse. It was the sorrel filly Corona Lips (#1A, starting position #4) who achieved this goal for Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez, making her run through the center of the difficult track. Despite her hesitations along the way, she showed her power in the final yards and prevailed by 3 1/4-lengths over the colt Jess A Reason (#4), stopping the clock in :19.16 when crossing the finish line for a 103 speed index, which is the best so far in her short career of only four outings on the track and is also her first victory after finishing second in the Jesus “Nuchi” Jimenez Sanchez Classic in 2020.
Rosalino Alcudia was the rider responsible for success- fully leading the filly to this triumph for trainer Adán López Alejandre.
Bred in the United States
by Terry and Irene Stennett,
Corona Lips is a daughter of
the stallion Jess Lips and she
is out of A Corona Episode,
a bearer of Corona Cartel’s
paternal genes. The offspring
of A Corona Episode have
already left their mark in Mexico through
her daughter One Famous Episode (by One Famous Eagle), whose successful career earned her the titles of AQHA Mexican Champion, Champion American 3 Year Old and Mexican Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly in the 2013 racing season. She obtained these achievements for Cuadra A.B., where the late rider Moisés Molina Romo was a fundamental part.
For this win, $164,650 pesos (approx. $8,207 U.S.) was added to the bankroll of Corona Lips, and it should be noted that
this was the first classic that Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez won that after- noon, which was followed by Makit Snappi in the Revelation Classic.
The colt Jess A Reason (Good Reason SA-Jess Send Me) finished in second place ridden by Leonardo Vidaña for owner Cuadra Baldeli and trainer Ismael Ayala Salas.
The filly Klassy Dixie (Corona Cartel- Klassy Chick, Valiant Hero) was third under Angel Santillan for owner Cuadra San Judas Tadeo and trainer Victor Jarillo Sanchez.
BP Mariah Cartel (Corona Cartel-BP Mariahs JP), One Happenstance (One Famous Eagle-Beaus Wagon), Smokin My Hocks (Kiss My Hocks-Smokin Corona Chick), Sweet Lil Ivory (Ivory James-Lil Sweet Minnie) and BV Myheartwillgoon (BV Travelin Soldier-Azoomin Streak) completed the order of finish.
