travel through the earth. Earthquakes are usually brief, but may repeat over a
                                   long period of time. (Earth Science. 2001).

                                        Earthquakes are classified as large and small. Large earthquakes usually
                                   begin  with  slight  tremors  but  rapidly  take  form  of  violent  shocks.  The

                                   vibrations from a large earthquake last for a few days known as aftershocks.

                                   Small earthquakes are usually slight tremors and do not cause much damage.
                                   Large earthquakes are known to take down buildings and cause death and

                                   injury (Richter, 1935). According to some statistics, there may be an average
                                   of 500,000 earth- quakes every year but only about 100,000 can be felt and

                                   about 100 or so can cause damage each year.

                    ORGANIZATION

                    Like other essay, explanation text includes an introduction, a body and a conclusion.

                    What the different is explanation text organized into steps. You must discuss the steps
                    in your process in the order in which they occur. Here are three important point to

                    remember in organizing an explanation text:

                         •  Write the thesis statement that name the process to be explained.
                         •  A clear order of paragraphs that describe how and why.

                         •  Transition signal for chronological order.
                    Thesis statement

                    Identifying the process to be explained. Emphasize the process rather than the particular

                    thing involved in the process. Statements often use verbs like plan, develop, and evolve

                    or expression such as the process of, five stages and several steps.
                            The process of heating water by using solar radiation involves three main steps.

                            The field of genetic engineering has developed rapidly in the past ten years.
