profession. The Board has worked to help AAMFT increase its relevancy via actions such as:
• Setting aside and monitoring development funds
• Overseeing the development of the Leadership Symposium and Certificate Program
• Investing in launching of Emerging Professionals, Military Families, and Approved Supervisor Networks
• Developing of the Family TEAM to advance the profession locally and at the federal level
• Overseeing and supporting development of the TENEO system as an excellent opportunity for online CEUs
• Overseeing opportunities to enhance student engagement such as that offered by the new Student Ethics Competition
Actions like these are about making the Association more nimble and more able to be responsive and reflect only a few examples of the focus on integrity and relevancy within AAMFT on behalf of the profession. Such actions require significant investment of time and money, as well as intentionality about how we think about the Association and its responsibility to members and the profession.
While these changes have been occurring, ongoing business has continued. Federal advocacy efforts have continued with
a well-designed plan for effective connection with federal legislators. AAMFT staff continue to participate in conversations at the federal level about mental health, the importance
of marriage and family therapy, and other practice-related matters. Ethics and legal consultations continue, as do all of the other “regular” activities of staff. There are literally more day-to-day operational requirements than I can name.
Some of the changes may seem overdue and some may seem to be happening too quickly. While for some, the most visible action taken by the Board over the past few years has been putting forward recommended changes to the by-laws, it is by far not the only one, though it is critical to establish a structure that allows us to continue forward movement. The truth is, that all of what the Association has done and is working to achieve are interconnected and interdependent. I am proud to have been part of it. There is more to be done and I look forward to participating both during the next year in my new role as Past President and once I leave the Board.
With gratitude and much respect,
Marvarene Oliver, EdD, LMFT, LPC
