Schlitt III, PhD, P.E.
William Joseph Schlitt III, PhD, P.E. began his long standing career with Kennecott Minerals Company in Salt Lake City, from 1968 to 1982, first as a scientist, from 1968 to 1975; senior scientist, from 1975 to 1976; then manager of the hydrometallurgy department, from 1977 to 1981; and finally principal program manager, from 1981 to 1982. Afterward, he journeyed to Houston to work with Brown & Root, Inc.,
first as a process staff manager, from 1982 to 1983; then became technical manager, from 1983 to 1993; and finally product line manager of chemicals, from 1993 to 1994. With his knowledge and expertise, he transferred to and remained as process technical manager with the Davy Nonferrous Division of Kvaerner Metals, San Ramon, California, until 2004. He then formed his own consulting firm, Hydrometal, Inc., and remains as president. He is a registered Professional Engineer.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Schlitt received his Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, in 1964, and shortly afterward in 1968, his Doctor of Philosophy in Metallurgy, from Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Schlitt holds membership with several organizations. He was a member of the oversight committee on solution mining for the National Science Foundation, Socorro, New Mexico, 1977 to 1979, a member of the oversight committee on smelter flue dust with the Environmental Protection Agency, Butte, Montana, 1978 to 1979, a member of the Society of Mining Engineers (board of directors, 1984 to 1995, chairman of the mining and exploration division 1986 to 1987), The Metallurgical Society (board of directors, 1982 to 1983), and the Canada Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi.
Aside from his professional livelihood, Dr. Schlitt contributed his time as a past president of the Fort Bend County Kennel Club, Richmond, Texas, 1988 to 1990 and found much gratification as a licensed dog show judge, which he still enjoys.
His achievements include recipient of the Arthur F. Taggart award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, 1998 and 2006. He was also elected a Distinguished Member award from this same society in 2001 and received its M.E. Wadsworth award in 2009. He also has numerous publications and patents in his field.
