         Bruce M. Russett, PhD is a prominent educator who has been teaching at Yale University for the past 59 years. He began his tenure at the university as an assistant professor in 1961, he then rose to associate professor and full professor. Earning the title of Dean Acheson professor of international relations and political science in 1985, a position he held until 2011, he also served as chair of the department of political science for six years and director of United Nations studies for 13 years. Since 2011, Dr. Russett has been a Dean Acheson research professor of international politics and professor of international and area studies. Furthermore, he has provided his expertise to several other universities as a visiting professor, including Columbia University, the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina, Tel Aviv University, the University of Tokyo, and Harvard University, among many others.
Dr. Russett has authored almost 30 books, most recently including “Hegemony and Democracy” in 2011 and “International Security and Conflict” in 2008. At the inception of his career, he penned “World Handbook of Political and Social Indicators” in 1964 and was the co-author of “Interest and Ideology” in 1975. In 1970, he notably wrote “What Price Vigilance? The Burdens of National Defense,” which received the Kammerer Award from the American Political Science Association the following year. Alongside author John R. Oneal, he authored “Triangulating Peace: Democracy, Interdependence and International Organizations,” which received the Best Book of the Decade Award for 2000-2009. From 1973 to 2009, he also served as the longtime editor of the Journal of Conflict Resolution. In consideration of his exceptional undertakings, he was the subject of the book “Bruce M. Russett: Pioneer in the Scientific and Normative Study of War, Peace and Policy” in 2015. Dr. Russett is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Political Science Association. A frequent grantee of the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the John and Catherine MacArthur Foundation, he holds a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College and a Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University. He also received honorary doctorates from Uppsala University in 2002, and from Williams College in 2011.
