Dawn Gabbitas Abell is an educator and school administrator with over 30 years of experience in her field. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, she
graduated in the class of 1969 with her Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Michigan University. Subsequently, in 1982, Ms. Abell earned a Master of Education in School Administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Throughout her career she has supplemented this foundation with certifications in Secondary Administration and Supervision and as a Vocational Center Director from the University of South Carolina in 1989 and 1990, respectively. In 1998 she earned her certification in Elementary Education from Middle Tennessee State University.
Her first post was in Michigan as an Art and First Grade teacher for the Learning Improvement Center at Allen Park School District, in 1969. She later worked as an art, remedial reading, and writing teacher at the Clover School District. Moving to South Carolina, she became a teacher of Gifted and Talented for the Cherokee County School District One, and an art teacher for the Gaston County Schools. As an educational entrepreneur, Ms. Abell is the owner of the Learner’s Edge.
As an administrator, Ms. Abell was the Curriculum Supervisor and Tech Prep Director of the Beaufort- Jasper Career Center. She has been an assistant principal and administrative assistant at the Union County Vocational Center, and principal at both the elementary school and middle school levels. Ms. Abell served as assistant principal at Midwood Alternative School, Sedgefield Middle School, and at Starmont Elementary School. At the Wilson County School District, she worked as special advisor to vocational education.
In conjunction with her responsibilities as an educator, Ms. Abell is involved with multiple professional organizations, including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the American Vocational Association, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Business Education Association, and the South Carolina Network for Women in Administration. Ms. Abell chaired the Education Excellence Team on Vocational Education in 1991 and is a recipient of the Certification of Appreciation from the South Carolina Commission on Women.
As a writer, Ms. Abell has contributed multiple articles to professional journals, including An American Tragedy Unfolding: Our Educational System, Job Seeking and Job Keeping, and Special Needs Populations in Vocational Education. In her spare time, Ms. Abell enjoys such hobbies as horseback riding, antiquing, painting, and fishing.
