A determined fighter, she not only pushed herself to survive but gave witness to other women in their personal battles with this disease, helping so many to find the strength to live to fight for just another day. Committed to the cause of breast cancer research and advocacy, Meredith is an active volunteer with Reach to Recovery International, a network of individuals, groups, and organizations committed to improving the quality of life of women with breast cancer and their families through peer support, advocacy, and consumer involvement in research. Reach to Recovery’s mission is powerful yet simple: a woman who has lived through breast cancer and gives freely of her time to help another woman facing the same experience is a valuable source of support. And Meredith M. Smith lives this mission every day.
Remaining well-informed about the latest breakthroughs and treatments for breast cancer makes Meredith a particularly powerful advocate for those suffering from this terrible disease. Meredith acts as the Coordinator for Reach to Recovery Bermuda, and keeps the local Bermuda community alerted to the importance of breast cancer awareness. October is her busy month: Meredith is instrumental in organizing lectures and presentations on cancer awareness topics, as well as a fundraising fashion show and tea and a 5K walk/run. Meredith comments that is “...always wonderful to see so many walkers ‘stepping out’ for breast cancer awareness.” She is also involved with getting the Bermuda business community to “pink light” their buildings in the month of October for breast cancer awareness.
