After discovering a passion for chemistry and biochemistry from an early age, Dr. Manfred Philipp was determined to make it his career. He had developed an interest and motivation to improve the quality of other individuals’ lives, beginning by studying cardiovascular disease. While working on enzyme inhibitors of the blood clotting system, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, cum laude, from Michigan Technological University in 1966. He then continued his education at Northwestern University and was rewarded for his efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry in 1971. Subsequently, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Freiburg in Germany for four years, as well as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at
the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health for two years.
After being named a Professor Emeritus, Dr. Philipp served at Lehman College as a professor within the Department of Chemistry for more than 25 years until his retirement in 2016. Previously, he had served at the City University of New York Graduate Center as a professor of biochemistry and chemistry for the doctoral program. He also worked at the University of Munich’s Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry as a visiting scientist, the University of Ulm as a visiting professor in their polymer section, and the Weizmann Institute of Science as a visiting scientist in the Department of Biochemistry.
Since gaining a high level of expertise in the field, Dr. Philipp has authored non-refereed articles to several professional journals and has contributed his knowledge through numerous outlets, including symposium volumes, policy reports, textbook chapters, presentations, blog posts, and citations throughout the course of his incredible career. As a testament to his successes Dr. Philipp has received much admiration and respect. To his acclaim, he has received the 2020 Governor Norbert T. Tiemann Award from Beta Sigma Psi, the 2006 and 2012 Fulbright Scholar Award, the 2010 Resolution of Appreciation Award from the University Faculty Senate of CUNY, and the 1997 Lehman College Prism Award for Promotion of Diversity, among several
other accolades and grants.
