Hamilton: Butler County Courthouse
Left: The 1889 Butler County Courthouse watched over High Street and the stranded horse-drawn re equipment hours before the oodwaters peaked. The horses were taken to the Hotel Howald, which was located on the second and third oors at 140-148 High Street. The horses and re ghters rode out the ood in the second- oor bar room of the hotel.
In 1913, the Butler County Courthouse on the left side of the photo housed all Butler County courts and of ces, except the sheriff.
Right: Just a few feet from the river, the old municipal building (1935-1999) – the light stone building in the distance on the right – is a business incubator and a museum honoring famous children’s author Robert McCloskey. Much of the museum’s exterior artwork was designed by McCloskey, a Hamilton native. The restored historic Butler County Courthouse remains in use, but most county courts and county of ces are located in the Butler County Government Service Center at 315 High Street.
