WHAT COULD BE BETTER? The weekend of September 14 boat racing fans got to enjoy competition BBQ and hydroplane racing at the Second Annual America’s Finest BBQ State Champi- onship held at Crown Point in San Diego, California. Thirty teams camped and cooked with bay side views as the thunder boats roared by on a 2.5 mile oval course around Mission Bay. For the second year in a row event organ- izer Ed LaValle and the San Diego Police Museum teamed up with San Diego Bay- fair. “Our goal was to bring a premier Southern California BBQ event to San Diego during this world class boat race and place it right on the race course,” said LaValle. Robert Stouffer of So. Cal Event Manage- ment coordinated this KCBS sanctioned BBQ championship. Proceeds of the event went to support the San Diego Police Mu- seum which preserves the memory of ac- tive, retired and fallen law enforcement heroes. Sponsors included Heartland Meat Com- pany which provided meat for the vend- ing teams, Tito’s Handmade Vodka which donated an extra $1,000 in prize money to the first place brisket winner, Green Mountain Grills which donated a pellet smoker for raffle, California Coast Credit Union, ASAP Towing, Pellet Grills Galore, Pit Barrel Cookers, Law Offices of King Aminpour, and Cabo Wabo Tequila. BBQ team Bill’s Blue Line BBQ who placed 1st in People’s Choice donated all their proceeds and winnings to the San Diego Police Museum. “We are already planning for next year’s event and hope to have twice as many teams,” said LaValle. So sign up early if you want to enjoy a one of a kind event in America’s Finest City. BarbecueNews.com - 36 OCTOBER 2019 Some of the California teams at the American Royal.
