9:22 – Saved By a Gift Bag
Many companies have been financially impacted this year and unable to offer sponsorship or gifts for events. We totally understand. Thanks to our gracious sponsor, Croix Valley, the gift bags ma- terialized! Croix Valley provided all the teams with their own individually sealed Bloody Mary cocktail to toast with. The 9:22 morning tradition was saved! Cheers were offered up to the BBQ gods, and the contest was officially under way!
Race to the Turn-In:
As most everyone knows, turn-in rules have changed a bit this year. Masks up. Gloves on. And there is a sanitizing station before the turn-in table. Tom and Cindi Juhl did a great job of en- suring all the teams were following the new protocols. Everyone was doing their part to
keep each other safe.
The turn-ins flowed like clockwork, until the final lap. The brisket deadline was a mere minute away, and the box walkers turned to see Smokey D’s kick off his flip flops and begin to sprint. He was about as far away from turn- in as one could get. He had a 3 minute walk to complete in under 60 seconds. As he ramped up his sprint, the sea of people on the road cleared to the sides, just like for the Boston Marathon. Teams cheered him on, as he sprinted past. He made the turn-in table
with a whole second or two to spare! A tri- umphant finish to the Pro contest.
Not to be Out Done
The backyard contest went into full swing
right after the Pro contest finished. The backyard was stacked with 30 teams all gun- ning to be number one. Many teams were
fresh off their mentoring sessions the night before. I had taken a walk around the back-
yard area the night before and remarked on
how many talented teams were getting ready for battle. The reigning champs from last year were trying to defend their titles and lots of new teams were trying to hit the board.
Awards
Awards time. And...There it was. A trailer bed full of bags of Royal Oak charcoal. The bags were piled taller than the tallest pit master. Charcoal Nirvana! At last, we had found all the charcoal. The organizers and announcers must have felt like Oprah handing out all those bags of charcoal! Here’s a bag for you, here’s a bag for you, and “Here, take a bag for your 2-week old
baby!” Ah, everything is right with the world again.
