is presenting a challenge for them to test their culinary skills. This always comes in the ancillary categories. November 14th will be one just like this and drawing cooks from all over the nation to be a part. Promoter, Mark Lambert of Sweet Swine O’ Mine Distributing is having a two-day event where, of course, there will be steaks cooked as well as chili (day one) and chicken wings (day two) for the ancillaries, which all seems normal. But as we know, this year is anything but normal. Since there hasn’t been any whole hog competitions this year, Mark got together with Ken and Brett to come up with a spe- cial one-of-a-kind whole hog ancillary. The entry is $600 but includes the hog which keeps everything level. You will choose it like you do your steaks each week. The payout for the winner of this one ancillary will be $2000. This will be one event you do not want to miss, even as a spectator.

When you walk through a cookoff each week you’ll come across a large variety of grills our cooks are using. Predomi- nantly what you will see is the PK. Designed to be a portable kitchen in which you can cook anything from steaks to desserts, the PK is the most popular among our cooks. For this reason, having them as one of the SCA sponsors is exciting and makes a lot of sense. “The PK is a world class grill and smoker. There is no need to choose between these two important func- tions or purchase separate equipment. Whether you intend to grill at high temperatures for short periods, like burgers and hot dogs, or at low temperatures over longer periods, like pork
shoulder and beef brisket, the cast aluminum PK will make you a backyard hero because it nails the landing on both.” We are grateful to have them as an SCA Business Partner.
ACE Hardware Points Chase
If this was a normal year, we would be talking about the world champions and preparing for a brand-new season. But this is anything but normal, it’s 2020 the COVID edition. As it is, we are winding down for what is proving to be a historic points run. Sandy Brown is still the leader of the pack with what seems to be an insurmountable lead this late in the season. As some of the other points leaders were talking, this may be a chase to see who gets second place, currently held by Ben Blanton. Ben, Layne Holmes and Tim Brown (Sandy’s husband) only have 6 points separating them. This could very well end up with a husband and wife top two by the time the season is over. But as the old saying goes, “it isn’t over until it’s over.”
We can expect the rest of the Top Ten to continue to shuffle as there are many more cookoffs remaining on the schedule for the rest of this year. Look for Terry Roan to still make a surge as well as John Pendray as they cook week in and week out. Jerry Buchan, Cheryl Williams (the only other woman in the top ten), Andy Williams and Ron Burns continue to cook to re- main in the Top Ten. Finishing in the Ace Hardware Top Ten is very prestigious. Another battle worth watching is Cheryl and Andy, who as of this writing, are separated by only one point.
