Building The Sport Of Steak Cookoffs!
  SCA is Gearing Up for
Another Exciting Year
By: SC Angus
We just celebrated Thanksgiving and there is a lot to be thank- ful for in the SCA. Our supportive families with whom we couldn’t do what we do and our reps along with the judges who make it out every weekend. Then there are you cooks who travel from event to event turning in the best steaks and bring- ing the most creative ancillaries. As we look back over 2019, we are grateful for the continued growth the SCA is experiencing not only in the USA, North America but around the world in Australia, Europe and Asia. This year we saw records broken, new champions crowned and a lot of new contests which has kept us busier than ever and we love it. To this end, all we can say is, “Thank you for your continued support.”
With Christmas about three weeks away, I’m sure you’re finally putting up the decorations and trimming the tree you’ve been holding of from doing. If you’re anything like me, you’ve also made your Christmas wish list which is probably rather long. Maybe you have on your list a new steak box like current points champ, Matt Ouverson uses. Perhaps you’ve decided to “Trust in the dust,” get some Johnny Joseph seasoning, feel the lightning strike with some White Lightning or use other cham- pionship seasoning our fellow steak cooks developed, so they’re on your list. Maybe you’re trying to convince “Santa” you need a new PK or Pit Barrel for Christmas
to help you get a Golden Ticket for the 2020 World Championship. Whatever is on your Christmas list, we hope you find it under your tree or in your Christmas stocking.
As for the SCA, our Christmas wish list consists of you continuing to have fun at each cook you attend. Listed there is you winning that Golden Ticket you’ve come so close to receiving. We also want to hand out more of those around the world throughout 2020. We also know you travel many miles going from event to event, so topping our Christmas list, is continued safe travels for all of you road warriors as you are on the highways.
Event Spotlight
December has several events to enjoy in be-
tween all the holiday parties you’ll be attending. Many SCA cookoffs are used as fund raisers benefiting non-profit organi- zations in their local communities. On December 14th in El Dorado, AR is one such event. The organizers of this double steak contest have chosen Hope Landing, inc which provides therapy services to children with special needs regardless of the family’s ability to pay. This event also has a dessert cook as the ancillary and who doesn’t love sweets, especially during the Christmas season.
Partner Spotlight
Having a great thermometer is an essential part of turning in the winning steak and honestly, we couldn’t do it without one. I’ve also seen many of you with the infrared guns making sure the grill is at just the right temperature. This is why we’re so grateful to Maverick as one of our long-time sponsors. Maver- ick, who has been around for 35 years, manufactures innova- tive thermometers which help cooks worldwide get the best results, which makes a huge difference at a SCA contest.
ACE Hardware Points Chase
Last year’s points chase was certainly something to watch and this year’s is already shaping up the same way. With the latest
points in at time of writing, we see Jonathan Frerich at the top but only four points ahead of John Pendray who is only three points above Chris Reed and Mike Knight both tied for third. It is way too early in the season to say who will walking the stage in October. However, at this rate, the Ace Hardware points chase is on par for another record- breaking year with what will become familiar names as they vie for the ring and title of World Champion.
As we look forward to a great Christmas sea- son of cooking and family, we would like to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
See you in 2020.
