180 Chicken Entry
I’m going to be a better judge from this experience; my scoring will be not be drastically different. What is going to be different in how I judge is understanding how the barbe- cue gets to the judging table, this will give me added confi- dence in my judging. While judging is subjective, I believe this experience will improve my scoring.
1st Place Pork Entry
Machete Boys BBQ received a 180 in chicken, along with a first in pork and finished 6th overall at Ottumwa Smoketo- berfest.
The only thing I would have done differently was to have cooked with a team when I still had fifteen or twenty con- tests left to judge as KCBS recommends. Then everything I learned from cooking with a team could have been put to

After tasting all the entries and giving your opinion to the cook team, I have to say it is a humbling experience getting the score sheets and finding out the judges didn’t agree with you. I found cook teams appreciate comment cards containing helpful comments that help them understand the scores given.
