evening moved on to the awards as voted on by the members. Mark Noordsy was voted the Judge of the Year. Mark has been a judge
for years and devotes quite a
bit of his personal time to making our contests fair, ac- curate and fun.
For the first time the MBS
added awards for organizer
of the year. The MBS knows
that without organizers to
create and host our contests
there wouldn’t be the oppor-
tunities to compete that are
offered around the state. Or-
ganizers spend considerable
time, energy and often their
own expenses to offer com-
petitions. The first annual
award for Event Organizer of
the Year – Backyard went to
Beth Salzl. Beth runs several
backyard contests each year
including one of the Back-
yard Team of the Year con-
tests, B-Dale. The Event
Organizer of the Year – Pro
Division went to outgoing
board member Dick Dahlen.
Dick helps with almost any-
thing he can on contests
throughout the year and he
plays a significant role each
year in the annual Big Island
BBQ contest. All the awards were well deserved and all were voted on by the members.
Next up were the season long Team of the Year, (TOY) awards. Awards were presented in the Back-
yard Division to the top places in both chicken and ribs, as well as overall. Mag- num P.I.G. finished as the Reserve Grand Champion and the Backyard Grand Champion for 2019 was newcomer Schwonny Que.
On the pro side Hogline won TOY in both chicken and ribs. In pork and brisket, To- tally Sauced took home the trophies for first place. For overall TOY Hogline edged out Totally Sauced for Grand Champion. Congrats to both teams for amazing years!

Next up on the schedule is our annual Spring Training event on April 11th and the first contest is Minnesota in May on May 9th, we hope to see everyone at both. Until then we will be shoveling our driveways and planning
out crucial tweaks to our rubs, sauces and tech- niques.
