How to Use of this Field Manual

This field manual contains vascular plant species under different family, genus and specific
epithet. Species are not arrange chronologically or in any way. All of the vascular species listed in
this books are found in Potia, Alfonso Lista, Ifugao. Although most of the species are also found
in various part of the Philippines some of the photograph species are planted from collection

In order to properly use this field guide manual, one must have a basic knowledge in
Botany, Taxonomy, Morphology and Dendrology as this subjects are all interdependence to each
other. Leaf identification can be honed through constant familiarization on the phyllotaxy and
other dichotomous key of the various plants. The author made some of the most basic way in
identifying the listed species in order for the reader to easily identify the correct species when they
               see in the field.

Scientific name are governed by a botanical code of nomenclature the International Code
of Botanic Nomenclature (ICBN) as used in the Binomial nomenclature-system of naming in
taxonomy, which gives both the genus and the species there are 2 parts, the first is generic name
or the name of the genus and the second is specific epithet or the species example Pinus insularis,
               Pinus-is the genus, insularis-the species.
The nomenclature or naming has three type of names for a species (1) Local name-known
only in the region or locality (ALOCON) (2) Official common name-country (HIMBABAO)
Scientific name- international name of the plant (Broussonetia luzonica) Common name based on
               its chief characteristics. Examples are
                         Habitat-Agoho del Monte
                         Some distinctive feature-Pukinggang Kahoy
