Margaret Braithwaite, affectionately known as “Attae”,
was born on January 17, 1934, in Non-Pariel, East Coast Demerara,
Guyana. The second, of ten children born to the late Henry and
Elizabeth Braithwaite. Her quiet composure was at times overlooked,
but her presence was always felt among everyone. She was an avid
believer in Christ; Margaret attended “The Church of St. Marks”
where she was an active member of the Mothers’ Union the Golden
Age and Missionary Society.
Margaret was kind, loving, caring, and gentle, but she was a
connoisseur at heart. She loved to cook, and cooked she did, smoking
up the kitchen with whatever the request was, (cassava pone, salara,
roti & curry, cook-up rice, dahl, fish cake, rice porridge, bakes, fish
cakes, pepper pot, pickle onions and black cake) and the list goes on.
More importantly, she loved to share whatever she had with others,
because she was always cognizant of the times when she did not have
and could not provide for her children.
Attae raised her six children to be self sufficient, not to rely on anyone
and never to be judgmental of anyone. Two of her favorite life learning
quotes are “Don’t hang your hat where your hand cannot reach” and
“God help those who help themselves.” Her favorite scripture is Psalm
121.
