The APTA Practice Chairs continue to meet via WebEx throughout the year . Recently, the meeting consisted of topics related to prevention/wellness, payment and practice management advocacy, diversity initiatives and the physical therapy outcome registry .
One of the ways the APTA is looking to reach out is via other groups where the value of PT can be exposed . Groups such as the Special Olympics, National Institute of Health and WellCoaches already understand the value of PT, but may not be sharing the knowledge that PTs possess . One initiative being worked on is how we can assist these special populations and help to make more people active and healthy . This may be by PTs assisting in the organization or community classes, or going in and remodeling already existing classes to make them more beneficial. Consider your connections outside of work and see if there are ways that you can reach out
to help a group or organization that you may not be actively working with from a physical therapy standpoint .
Continued efforts are being pushed forward to address the opioid epidemic and ensuring that physical therapy is being viewed as a health and viable alternative for pain management . The APTA continues to partner with multiple groups and external stake holds to demonstrate the value of physical therapy .
Lastly, there are continued efforts to push forward the physical therapy outcomes registry . This is considered “information from the progression, for the profession .” This registry hopes to:
• Develop progression identified standards that broadly represent all patient, setting and reasons for visit .
• Incorporate adherence to best practice with inclusion of selected clinical practice guidelines
• Identify areas of quality improvement and marketing opportunities
• Identify variations in practice for benchmarking that will allow for comparisons beyond
your practice
