2017 OPTA Scienti c Symposium – #ChoosePT: Evidence for Physical Therapy Pain Management Without Opioids

The United States is experiencing an epidemic of prescription opioid overdose, a quadrupling since 1999 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is “urging health care providers to reduce the use of opioids in favor
of safe alternatives like physical therapy ”1 As part of the #ChoosePT campaign, APTA advocates “before accepting a prescription for opioids, patients should talk to their health care providers about related risks and safer alternatives ”2 Physical therapy professionals play a crucial role in providing evidence based treatment of pain without the danger of opioid use
OPTA’s 2017 Scienti c Symposium will focus on the evidence to support physical therapy interventions for pain management —across the continuum (including all portions of the lifespan and in all practice areas, including but not limited to pediatrics, geriatrics, orthopedics, sports physical therapy, neurology, oncology, cardiopulmonary, acute care, women’s/men’s health, wound care, etc.).
Evidence-based presentation proposals are now being accepted on topics related to:
● DESCRIPTION of pain management across the lifespan and across the continuum of physical therapy care, including communication, terminology, and documentation
● PURPOSE of pain management in physical therapy practice, how this intervention has changed based on current evidence, and implications for physical therapy practice today and in the future
● INNNOVATIONS in evidence-based pain management
● APPLICATION/DEVELOPMENT of evidence-based
physical therapy interventions for improving
pain management
● OUTCOMES of physical therapy interventions
for improvement of pain management and effect on improvement in the human experience, including case studies
● REVIEW of current clinical practice guidelines or other evidence-based documents related to pain management

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Each presentation submission will be accepted online and must include the following for consideration:
1 Title of presentation (up to 150 characters)
2 Description of the presentation clearly stating how you will address one of the above topics (at least 100, but no more than 200 words)
3 Presentation outline including length of time on each topic Must be 16 to 18 minutes total (see below for more info)
4 Learning objectives – at least 3 following the document Writing Effective Learning Objectives for Your OPTA Conference Presentation (75-150 words)
5 Preliminary bibliography of at least 5 works published within the past 10 years
6 Presenter information: name, phone number, email address, credentials/quali cations to teach the speci c course material, pertinent previous speaking history (at least 100, but no more than 200 words each presenter)
PRESENTATION FORMAT: Research Shorts will showcase speakers who will educate our audience in short snippets of well- developed information Speakers will be challenged to hone their presentation to include important material and inspire the audience in 15 to 18 minutes Presenters will have the opportunity to augment their presentation with PowerPoint slides that are concise and visually pleasing
SUBMISSION OF PRESENTATIONS: Submissions will be accepted online via OPTA’s Conference Submission Portal ohiopt org/events_symposium_por SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE BY April 23, 2017. Con rmation of receipt will be sent via email.
TIMELINE FOR REVIEW: Presentations will be reviewed by the Conference Committee during the month of June Letters of acceptance or denial will be sent out via email
