Purified Storax is a brownish-yellow viscous liquid appearing transparent in
thin layers; odor, agreeable aromatic and balsamic; taste, pungent and balsamic.
Purified Storax is rather heavier than water.
Solubility
Purified Storax is practically insoluble in water; entirely soluble in alcohol
90%, in ether, in acetone, in carbon disulphide and in glacial acetic acid.
Test for Identity
Effect of potassium chromate/ sulphuric acid: Heat about 0.5 g of Purified
Storax with 5 ml of potassium chromate T.S. and few drops of sulphuric acid; the
odor of benzaldehyde is developed.
Constituents
Levant Storax consists of two resin alcohols (50 %), α-storesin and β-storesin
which are partly free, partly in combination with cinnamic acid and partly with
sodium. Storax also contains storesin cinnamate (10-20 %), cinnamyle cinnamate
(5-10 %) in needle crystals; phenyl propyl cinnamate (10 %), volatile oil (0.5-1 %),
a trace of vanillin, and free cinnamic acid (2-5 % ) which may be obtained by micro-
sublimation.
Uses
Storax is a local and remote stimulant and antiseptic, resembling in these
respects Balsam of Peru, Benzoin …. etc. It is also used as microscopical mount for
diatom
