TOM MUEHLENBECK RECREATION CENTER
The Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center project, built for the City of Plano, included the new construction of an 83,845-square-foot community center located in the west area of Plano, TX. The facility serves as a recreational aquatic center for families and houses an eight-lane indoor competitive pool with two one-meter diving boards, an indoor leisure pool with two water slides, and an outdoor pool with three water slides and a waterfall. The community center was constructed of a steel structural frame, tiled interior, stone façades, wood panels, and large glass windows allowing natural light and a view of the creek, which bisects the property diagonally. The project also features a gymnasium with elevated running track, a group exercise studio, locker rooms, underwater seating, an outdoor jogging trail, and a playground. Pedestrian bridges over the creek from the parking area to the entrance of the facility and preservation of trees complete the site. Due to the facility’s seamless incorporation into the surrounding natural landscape, the Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center received the 2008 Innovative Architecture Design Award from Recreation Management magazine.
