NATIONAL CENTER FOR SUPERCOMPUTING APPLICATIONS AT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) project, built for the University of Illinois, included the new construction of 142,000 square feet of computer labs, faculty offices, a 200-seat lecture hall, instructional labs, and executive conference rooms in Normal, IL. The facility supports over 400 NCSA employees, houses the NCSA Petascale Computing Facility, and serves as the anchor for the new information technology quadrangle on the University of Illinois campus. The facility was constructed using block structural framing and brick exterior. The project also features 24-megawatt electrical capacity, 5,400 tons of water cooling capacity from the University’s chilled water distribution loop, and three on-site cooling towers to provide naturally chilled water from the outside air. The National Center for Supercomputer Applications project now provides an environment for researchers and scientists to further their empirical goals.
