Alphabetising and sorting
Learn about
This document will have details about sorting a reference list alphabetically. As
there are a few quirky issues, read this thoroughly to ensure accurate sorting of
your references.
References must be listed in strict alphabetical order. This can be done quickly and
accurately using the Sort feature located on the Paragraph group on the Home tab.
Sorting is applied to paragraphs based on the first letter or character in each paragraph. Two
paragraphs with the same first letter are then sorted by the second letter and so forth.
Remember that a paragraph can be a single word or character.
Watch out!
Sorting in will place the contents in the following order, starting at the top of the list:
1. Stray Enters will appear first as these lines are blank.
2. Next, characters, such as #, *, $, ‘ will appear.
3. Then, Numbers, starting with 0, 1, 2 etc. will be listed.
4. Finally, Letters, starting with A, B, C etc. will be alphabetised.
