When filling your container or raised bed, remember
to stop about 2 inches from the top – this allows room
for a layer of mulch. You will find that some settling
will occur and the soil may sink slightly. Avoid planting
immediately afterwards – give the soil time to settle.
MULCH YOUR CONTAINERS
There is a wide selection of mulching materials includ-
ing straw, compost, wood chips, bark, pine needles,
grass clippings, etc. Apply a top-dressing layer about
two inches thick on top of the soil around the plant. MULCHING
Avoid piling the mulch up against the stem of the
plant. MATERIALS
Mulching will:
conserve moisture—you will not need to water so
often
insulate the soil by keeping it cool in summer and
warm in winter
suppress weeds by preventing them from germi-
nating.
