PIONEERING A NEW FUTURE 37
deviations from ethical principles. The academy’s guidelines have served as the forerunner for the Indian National Policy on Academic Ethics.
Promoting Greater Representation of Women in Science: In every profession there is still a huge under-representation of women. This is also true in the field of science. The academy is committed to reducing this gender imbalance in science.
To address this imbalance and other problems that women often face in the pursuit of science, the academy formed the ‘Women in Science’
Panel in 2005. This panel has taken some major initiatives that include a role model programme
to motivate women to take up a career in science; it also highlights the contribution of women to
the progress of science, holds discussion sessions and conducts surveys to understand the problems faced by women in science. The panel published Lilavati’s Daughters: The Women Scientist of India in 2008, a publication to celebrate the contributions of women scientists to the progress of Indian science. The panel is creating a global database
of women scientists to enable networking and promoting representation of women in science.
Archiving for Posterity: An Oral History Archive – a repository of audio and video recordings of views and experiences of some of the academy’s leading scientists – is being set up. In addition to being a historical record, these recordings are
of inspirational value to students, scientists and historians of science. These recordings have been made accessible to the public.
Enhance Knowledge of the Frontiers of Science:
The academy provides opportunities to students and scientists in India to remain abreast and to enhance their knowledge by organizing a series lectures and symposia called ‘Frontiers of Science’. The organization also invites scientists of eminence to occupy various distinguished Chairs and professorships and to deliver lectures and meet with groups of students and scientists in various institutions in India.
Igniting Young Minds: The Academy Trust:
Recognizing the need to catch the young and
to get them thinking about science and solving scientific problems, the Academy Trust was formed in 2014 under the Indian Trust Act. By raising donations from institutions and individuals, a corpus fund was created to run it. The trust engages in activities that augment school curricula. In addition to encouraging and supporting young students to do internships in academic institutions, the trust also promotes industry internships.
The trust negotiates with various industries and obtains financial commitment for stipends that are provided to interns. •
CHAIR PROFESSORSHIPS Raman Chair: Established in 1972 by
the Government of India to honour the founder
of the academy, this
Chair has been occupied by eminent scientists, including Robert Hanbury Brown (1874), Dorothy Hodgkin (1979), Baruch
S Blumberg (1986), Hermann Bondi (1995- 1996), SR Srinivasa Varadhan (2009) and Ben Feringa (2019).
Jubilee Professor:
This professorship was instituted in the Platinum Jubilee year (2009) of the academy. Jubilee professors travel to smaller towns in India and interact with scientists and students and deliver lectures.
Janaki Ammal Chair: To honour women scientists and to encourage women to take up science as a profession, this Chair was instituted in 2017.
The Academy- Springer-Nature Chair: To uphold the academy’s commitment to enhance knowledge on sustainability, this Chair was established in 2017 to commemorate ten years of the co-publishing arrangement for the academy’s journals with Springer-Nature.
