Description and Functionality
Visually challenged persons repeatedly mention reliable access to public transport buses as their most pressing day-to-day mobility need. In boarding the transport vehicles without aid, main challenge is the identification of the route number of the vehicle they want to board and finding out the location of the entrance door. OnBoardTM offers a simple solution to this challenge. It consists of two modules: a mobile- like hand-held user module, and a bus module installed inside the bus near the front door with a large speaker facing outwards. Both modules can wirelessly communicate with each other. OnBoardTM has the following functions
End user will be able to query buses at bus stop and select the bus to board using battery powered user module.
Bus module installed in different buses shall respond to the user module giving it the configured route number.
Bus Routes shall be updated by bus authority in bus module by using the feeder module.
       State-of-the-art
OnBoardTM, an RF based bus identification system will aid visually impaired persons to board buses without any sighted assistance. It is adaptable, suited to any traffic conditions and can also be extended to any mode of transport.
Stage of Development
OnBoardTM prototype is already tested and the technology transfer has been done with the industrial partner KSPL, Noida and the production- ready design system is under development.
Approximate cost
₹500 for user unit and ₹5000 for bus unit in volumes
