Visually Challenged persons
Description and Functionality
DotBook – India’s first braille Laptop enable visually challenged persons to access digital text through a tactile interface. DotBook can be used as a standalone device to read, write, listen, browse, edit, chat information from multiple sources. It can also be connected to computers, laptops, kindle, web, mobile through cable, WiFi, data card, Bluetooth, etc. DotBook comes packed with custom developed applications & features that one would need to independently carry out day to day tasks, be it the educational assignments or office work, with ease.
State-of-the-art
Commercially available braille displays based on piezoelectric (PZT) actuation have not been able to penetrate the market due to their high cost. DotBook developed by team led by Assistech Lab, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is based on a patented technology of shape memory alloy (SMA) based actuation, brings this cost down to 25% of the existing displays, thus making this solution accessible to the millions who were previously not catered to.
       Stage of Development
Commercialized. The product will be manufactured, maintained and marketed by Kritikal Solutions, Noida while its key component, 10-cell Refreshable braille Cell modules, will be manufactured, maintained and marketed by Phoenix Medical Systems, Chennai.
Specifications and Approximate Cost
The device comes out in two variants: DotBook 40Q, a 40-Cell Display with QWERTY keyboard; and DotBook 20P, a 20-Cell Display with Braille keyboard. Estimated Cost of DotBook 40Q is approximately ₹60000/-
