Description and Functionality
NACVI provides an integral solution to visually challenged coalescing technologies that enable Collision Avoidance, Pit detection and Navigation in different built environments. The prototype, a low cost, light weight and rugged device technologically augments the very well accepted white cane and has the following functions:
1. Helps the end users in collision avoidance, pit detection and navigation - Error free detection of objects up to 3 meters consistently and an audio & vibratory warning to the user.
2. Track the location to provide aid in case of emergency.
3. Customized augmentation depending on the needs of the person.
State-of-the-art
The device is a combination of three technologies – (i) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar, LIDAR & Ultrasonic low power Tx/Rx for obstruction/pot-hole detection and abrupt changes in the ground level (ii) GPS & RF-ID for Navigation and (iii) Wi-Fi & GSM for Communication. Due to the low energy frequency sweeping technique employed, the prototype is impervious to jamming also. All the sensor information is fused with appropriate sensor fusing algorithms to trigger alarms to the users. The alarm tones and haptic feedback is modulated to indicate the type of obstruction.
Stage of Development
Preliminary trials have been conducted on the prototype for Obstruction detection, Pothole / Stairs detection and Navigation. The prototype is ready for commercialization.
