Dear Members, friends and readers,
Happy New Year to all!
This is the first edition of the Outdoor Showman magazine for 2021. I know we are all hoping that this year gets us all back to work, back on the road and back doing what we all love!
Selina and I are currently travelling to Victoria to start the bump in for Moomba, and we are grateful that the City of Melbourne reconsidered staging this important historical
event, following the recent announcement that it was going to be cancelled.
Many members have been fortunate to operate during the summer period with COVIDSafe Christmas carnivals, and all the feedback I’ve received has been very positive. Showmen are now well versed in operating COVIDSafe events across Australia and the support from locals and Australian’s holidaying in their own backyard has been amazing.
As you are aware, on the 23rd February we announced significant vehicle concessions applied by VicRoads to many of our member’s vehicle registrations. Whilst this is only valid until 30th June 2021, we see this as a major first step in assisting our members with vehicle costs, and it is our aim to advocate for our members on this issue well into the future.
We’ve also been working with NHVR to establish a National Notice for travelling Showmen and women. The details are being worked through however; it seems that a National Notice will be likely in June of this year, which will be a huge relief for many.
In the meantime the team at NHVR has supported members who require permits to travel, assisting us to navigate through the process, and for this we say thank you.
The Bendigo Easter Fair has deferred its 150th year celebration once again until 2022 however, Eggs-plore Bendigo is set to go and members are working on delivering a fun carnival in Bendigo for the Easter period. The carnival will be held at Tom Flood to comply with event and COVID-19 restrictions for one year only; trading Friday and Saturday 6pm – 10pm and Sunday 2pm – 8pm.
I’m also pleased to see the Agricultural Shows run slowly start to recover as we look forward to attending shows again. The Royal Easter Show is just around the corner and we hope this kick starts a good run of Shows for our members and Showmen and women nationally.
Let’s hope this is the start of a safe and successful year for all.
Safe Travels!
Elwin Bell Jnr. President
