The Board took note of the Communication report in the Board Pack.
The results of the survey, which will determine whether Porcus will continue as a print or digital magazine, are expected to be available by the end of May.
8.4 Research and Development
The members were referred to an article published in Business News titled ‘SAPork stinks’ which emanated from the circulated carcass classification report made available for comment. Reference was made to boar taint and how genetics might prevent the problem. The article generated a huge emotional response.
The establishment of a virus bank by South Africa would be the first in the world and was met with approval. The research that South Africa had done on ASF is world class. Dr Peter Evans serves on two FAO (Food Agriculture Organisation) committees for ASF. The industry has presence and first-hand knowledge on what was happening with ASF around the world.
8.5 Business Intelligence
A pilot project was conducted on traceability. Traceability from farmer to abattoir was a first for South Africa. The integration was good. The pilot project was in progress to iron out all problems.
The meat matrix had never been detectable and merely depended on the efficiency of the abattoir. SAPPO added the farmer to the abattoir.
Much time and effort was spent on data security to ensure that all was in place to comply with legislation.
