8.7 Corporate Governance
All the meetings were set for the regional visits from the end of May to 2 June. Feedback will be provided on SAPPO, and ASF and the constitutional changes will be discussed.
Johann Kotzé reported that a virtual AGM was considered due to the uncertainty of what might happen during the next few months. It was decided not to continue with the physical AGM given the uncertainty and additional cost that might occur.
If everything opens up again before the end of 2021, SAPPO might consider hosting a day that is different to get all role players together.
Discussion:
The Board members agreed to a virtual AGM. EB 05/2021-12/05/21
8.8 CEO Summary
Johann Kotzé reported that a strategic conversation had taken place with young leaders and upcoming leaders in the industry. Chantell Ilbury was invited to facilitate the discussion due to her understanding of the industry. He referred the members to Chantell Ilbury’s report attached to the Board Pack.
An important point that emerged during the discussion was that the same strategy cannot be followed for both small-scale and commercial farmers, even when dealing with the Minister.
It was clear that further open conversations were needed with younger people.
The industry had been politically correct for too long and now needed to do what is right.
Customer behaviour has changed and is very different than in the past.
China is very disruptive in the world market and very good at it. The impact thereof is enormous.
The South African economy will play a role in what happens to the industry. The consumers’ disposable income will determine how much pork they buy. Consumers focus on eating right instead of eating luxuriously.
The pork price was currently very good compared to where it was.
