     The Coronation
                                            ART PIECE
                            by Rodrick Howard (2020)
Done in pastel, colored pencil, and
india ink, this piece features a young
Black man receiving a haircut. This
drawing is a reflection of Black culture,
                        specifically the importance of barber-
shops in the Black community. Its title
implies that receiving a haircut is akin to
                        a coronation, a ceremony whereby a
king or queen is given his or her crown.
A Black man’s hair style can often be
viewed as a symbol of status. The piece
is also a response to the mass barber-
shop closures during the onset of the
                                           COVID-19 pandemic.
